The Art of Money Getting
P.T. Barnum’s book, The Art of Money Getting was an interesting experience. Despite being published in 1890, the concepts and advice shared in this book are just as relevant today. I opted for the audio version, which provided a concise and engaging two-and-a-half-hour listening experience. From the several different books I’ve read, podcasts I’ve listened to and videos I’ve watched on earning money, becoming rich, being successful, improving yourself, and the like this book seems to be a Cliff’s Note version of all of them.
Timeless Principles for Financial Success
The Art of Money Getting contains a collection of proverbs and principles that are as applicable now as they were when Barnum first penned them. Some of these include familiar wisdom such as not spending more than you earn, saving money, avoiding the temptation of keeping up with others, and being both cautious and bold in business endeavors. The book emphasizes the importance of maintaining good health, particularly by advocating for moderation in alcohol consumption. Another noteworthy point is the emphasis on teaching children a trade, ensuring they possess valuable skills that can secure their financial well-being.
Observations and Reflections
One intriguing aspect of this book is contemplating how P.T. Barnum derived these principles from his own experiences and observations of others. More than a century later, many of these same principles stand up to empirical testing and much larger sample sizes. I don’t have any sources to back up that claim, but I’m sure it’s true of at least some of Barnum’s principles.
It raises the question of how often authors merely rehash previous success literature, fitting their narratives into established principles rather than critically examining their own lives for unique insights. Perhaps in the age of scientific methodology and widespread research, we may discover hidden principles that could benefit the general public.
Refreshing Insights and Pleasant Presentation
The Art of Money Getting stands out as a refreshing read due to its incorporation of engaging stories alongside wealth-building principles. P.T. Barnum’s anecdotes make the book more enjoyable and relatable, ensuring that readers can glean valuable lessons from his experiences.

Narration
The audio narration of this book was professionally executed, capturing the essence of the times in which it was written. While the accent choice added authenticity, a modern American accent would have sufficed for me personally.

Its enduring relevance and concise format make it a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their financial situation.
