The Guardians of Magic in Children of Blood and Bone

I’ve been thinking about the role of the people who connect humans with magic and the gods. Though they have this ability, they are also bound by a rule that they can only help humans and cannot harm them. This makes me wonder why they don’t have any means of protecting themselves. Surely, the gods or the Sky Mother would have given them some way to defend themselves, especially since they are so important. It seems like a big oversight on their part.

I also thought about the character of Prince Inan. I could tell from the beginning that he was supposed to be a complex character. At first, I didn’t care much for his point of view, but I think the strength of his chapters comes from seeing his character development. I’m interested to see how he will evolve throughout the series.

Amari is still the helpless princess.

Overall, I’m enjoying Children of Blood and Bone. It’s a well-written and exciting fantasy novel with a diverse cast of characters. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

First draft written in 2019.
