Anti-Racism in Emerging Technologies

I started reading the book Race After Technology by Rudolf Benjamin a while ago and recently picked it back up. From what I gather so far, the crux of the book is that as technology continues to develop, it has and will continue to perpetuate racial biases or racism. It’s crucial that we remain aware of this fact and scrutinize the results and effects of our emerging technologies. We need to look at them with a critical eye and resist the urge to simply go along with the flow.

To address these issues, I believe we should start by asking standard questions to developers of new technologies. They should be required to consider how their technology may perpetuate racism and what active steps they are taking to combat it. Furthermore, they should be monitored and held accountable for their actions.

However, it’s important to note that just like with DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives, many companies tend to abandon these efforts when they become inconvenient. Despite this, we must continue to push back against racial biases and discrimination perpetuated by technology.
