Notes on This Week in Neuroscience: Neuromodulation in treatment-resistant depression

Recording a few notes on the podcast episode “This Week In Neuroscience” episode 35.

Study Indicates that there is no Link Between Serotonin and Depression

One meta-analysis of meta-analyses reports that there is no link between serotonin and depression. Therefore, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs may not actually be effective in treating depression.

Identifying Centers of Depression Using Deep Brain Stimulation

Studies with deep brain stimulation may provide a way to personalize treatment for depression, where one would have to map out brain areas that are susceptible to depression or may be related to depression. This approach may be individualized to each patient.

With that said, a Deep Brain Stimulation case study suggests that the ventral striatum may be associated with depression.

Hans Berger

Lastly, the discoverer of brainwaves, Hans Berger, actually committed suicide after dealing with a long bout of depression. And he also tested the EEG first on his kids.
